Difference between ATM, GTM, and GCM Explained Simply for Aussies

Just the other day, I was scrolling through a popular 4x4 forum, reading a thread about a bloke who had just picked up a new dual-cab ute and a massive 22-foot family van. He was asking if his setup was legal, and within ten minutes, there were fifty different replies. Half of them were completely wrong, and the poor guy was more confused than when he started.

I get it. When I bought my first proper touring rig, I spent a solid weekend at the kitchen table staring at the compliance plates, scribbling numbers on a notepad. ATM, GTM, GCM, Tare, payload... it genuinely feels like you need an engineering degree just to pack the esky for a long weekend up the coast. The sales brochures tell you that your ute can tow 3500kg, but they conveniently leave out the fine print about what that actually does to your legal limits.

ATM: Aggregate Trailer Mass (The Hard Ceiling for Your Van)

Let’s start with the caravan itself. ATM stands for Aggregate Trailer Mass. Imagine unhitching your fully loaded caravan from your car and leaving it sitting on its own wheels and the jockey wheel. The total weight of that van pressing down on the ground is your ATM.

Every van has a legal ATM limit stamped on the compliance plate. Think of it as the absolute maximum weight the van chassis and suspension are built to handle. To figure out how much gear you can pack, you take that ATM limit and subtract your van's empty weight (Tare).

Here's the trap a lot of us fall into: we trust the Tare weight on the plate. My advice? Don't. Take your empty van to a local weighbridge. By the time the dealer adds an awning, a couple of gas bottles, and upgraded batteries, your real Tare is often way higher, meaning your actual payload is much smaller than you thought.

GTM: Gross Trailer Mass (What the Axles Actually Carry)

This is the one that trips almost everyone up. GTM stands for Gross Trailer Mass.

When you hitch your caravan onto the back of your LandCruiser or Ranger, the front of the van is lifted off the jockey wheel and supported by the car. That weight resting on your tow ball (Tow Ball Weight) is no longer being carried by the caravan’s wheels.

So, the GTM is the weight that is only pushing down through the caravan's tyres while hitched. The basic formula is: ATM = GTM + Tow Ball Weight.

Why does this matter? Because your caravan's axles and tyres are rated specifically for the GTM. If you pack all your heavy gear directly over the wheels or toward the rear, you might technically be under your ATM, but you could overload the GTM. I've seen blokes snap an axle on corrugated dirt tracks because they ignored how the weight was distributed.

GCM: Gross Combined Mass (The Reality Check)

Now we bring the tow vehicle into the mix. GCM stands for Gross Combined Mass, and it is exactly what it sounds like: the total legal weight of your fully loaded car AND your fully loaded caravan rolling down the highway together.

This number is the ultimate reality check for the "3500kg towing capacity" myth. For example, if you actually tow a 3500kg caravan with a modern dual-cab ute, the GCM limit usually means you have barely any weight allowance left for the car itself. By the time you add a steel bullbar, a canopy, a fridge, and two adults, you are almost certainly over the legal GCM limit.

Towing Weights Explained

Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) is the absolute limit your tow vehicle can weigh when fully loaded. I’m talking about the car itself, you, the kids, a full tank of diesel, the bullbar, and the heavy tow ball weight pushing down on the back. You need to care because if you're over GVM, your steering goes light, your brakes struggle, and your insurance company will drop you in a heartbeat if you crash.
Tare is your caravan completely naked. No water, no gas, no camping chairs—just how it rolled out of the factory. ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) is the absolute maximum the van is allowed to weigh fully loaded while unhitched. Subtract the Tare from the ATM, and whatever number you get is your total payload allowance. Trust me, it fills up way faster than you think.
The easiest way at home is using a decent tow ball scale. If you're at a public weighbridge, pull the car onto the pad with the van hitched and take a reading of just the car's axles. Then, unhitch the van completely, drive off, and weigh just the car again. The difference is your Tow Ball Weight. Aim for about 8% to 10% of your total loaded van weight for a stable tow.
Usually, no. This catches so many blokes out. You might pay good money to upgrade your Ranger's GVM so you can carry more gear in the tub, but your GCM (the total weight of the car and van together) almost always stays the same. So, if you max out your new GVM, you literally have to tow a lighter caravan to stay legal. Always double-check with the engineer who plated it.
Nothing good. If a highway patrol waves you onto a portable weigh pad and you're over the ATM, you're not going anywhere. You'll cop a massive fine, and they’ll likely make you dump water or leave gear on the side of the road until you're legal. Dealers often add awnings, extra batteries, or a heavy mattress after the factory plate is stamped. The only way to know your true starting weight is to take the empty van to a weighbridge yourself.
